Well...

Gnome: made for simplicity of use, it targets for a user experience where the environment does not get in the way of the user, featuring a clean interface, also it is ubuntu's main desktop environment (which has the advantage of being better supported)

KDE: targeted toward the user that like control and an overall better integration between the applications and the environment. it normally consumes more resources than gnome, but it has a very broad selection of programs that integrate swiftly into the desktop and allows the user to customize more details to the taste of the user. it is Kubuntu's selected enviroment but it is not as well supported by canonical as ubuntu and gnome, though this is slowly changing. This environment features some of the favorite applications in the community as Amarok, the music player, K3B cd burning frontend, ktorrent and others which feature high customization.

Please try to press CTRL+ALT+"+" or CTRL+ALT+"-" keyborad keys to dinamically change your video card frequency.
Then configure it using the System->Preferences->Screen Resolution menu.

Hope This Helps

Can you post your /etc/xorg.conf file?... can you also tell us the brand and model of your monitor (or at least the resolution and frequency in which you used to work?)

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask nilesh for more information if necessary.
