Is it possible to connect to a computer running Windows?

Asked by John Brooks

I am thinking about getting Ubuntu but there is something I'm worried about.

I get internet on my desktop computer like this:

1. It goes from the ISP to a wireless router

2. It travels to my laptop running Windows XP through a wireless signal

3. It goes through a cable from my laptop to my computer

If I were to gut ubuntu 8.04 LTS would the laptop and the computer still be able to connect and share an internet connection?

There is no other way for me to get internet on my desktop computer other than the setup above. The connection is currently called on both computers Local Area Connection, and both computers are currently still running Windows XP and I won't install Ubuntu on the laptop.

I don't think that you should have a problem, but you can always test it out using the Live CD without making any changes. In any case, crossover cables and ethernet cables are standard and use a standard protocol, so I don't think that XP is doing anything mysterious in order for you to share internet between the computers.

That's great, thank you! I was already planning to use the live CD to check these things, but I just wanted to make sure. My live CD will take 4 to 6 weeks to deliver and I just wanted an answer.
