Hello swinfi2,

thankyou for this question.

I have two answers for you.

First the best way to install software to your ubuntu is using the package-manager. For Ubuntu (Gnome) is this Synaptic. Kubuntu take as default adept.

For playing video in gnome is totem the default player. Kubuntu uses kino for playing video. Eventually must install the "restricted" Packages to play a Video ?

firefox 3 is not officially supported in Ubuntu 7.10, because every package given out by a open source company like mozilla is always optimized for Ubuntu. Firefox 3 has been optimized for 8.04, not 7.10. Maybe, and i really don't know this for sure, firefox 3 will be optimized for 7.10 too.

If you do want to install FF3, (and i think it'll be a beta or RC - version), go to synaptic -> settings -> repositories -> tab Updates -> check the pre-release updates (gutsy-proposed)

Then you can search for firefox 3.

Please note that it's NOT recommended for unexperienced users to use the proposed or backports repositories!!!
