Maybe your button isn't working right. You should look into that.

this is a new notebook..........the light worked using vista.........i installed ubuntu 8.04,( got rid of windows vista). i'm pretty surd there isn't anything wrong with the ( it's not a button ) indicator light that flashes on the front of the notebook.

Oh it's not a button? Just a light? My Acer Aspire 5500Z has a button/light. Anyway, when you say it isn't on and blinking, do you mean that it should be blinking but it isn't or it should be on solid but it's blinking?

it's just a little led on the front edge of the notebook, right below the touch pad. when i was using windows vista it used to 'flutter' while on line. showing activity. it does nothing using ubuntu. i really don't mind tho........i wouldn't go back to windows. my wireless & ethernet connections work fine. i was just wondering about this little led, i got used to seeing it.

On my acer Aspire 7520G the led isn't blinking as well. I also have no idea why, but well, does it matter?

The light signifies network activity, and will turn your wireless on/off (with caveats). Mine didn't flash until a relatively recent kernel update. It's very annoying... but things still work ok. I've seen reports of the update breaking access to some wireless networks as well.

If I happen to turn off my wireless with the button, the only way I can get it to come back on is to disable the wireless network with the Ubuntu wireless gadget that lives in the panel, then I push the wireless button, and immediately afterwards re-enalbe the wireless network in Ubuntu. After a few seconds it is enabled again. (ACER 5920)
