WiFi no longer connects on logon since 8.04 upgrade

Asked by Roger W

After Hardy Heron 8.04 upgrade my WiFi no longer connects automatically on logon. If I want to connect I have to manually enable my WPA connection, as if I was connecting at a new hotspot. I notice that roaming is enabled, but if I disable it as it was before I upgraded it is impossible to connect at all. I see a number of similar problems reported but cannot see that any of the suggested solutions apply to me, though in some cases this may be because I don't understand the answer . My connection is listed in 'edit wireless networks' and info seems all correct, but it simply isn't being detected on logging-on to ubuntu. It only shows on left-clicking the network icon after I've manually connected as described. Before that, nothing shows. My machine is a Dell Inspiron 6400 supplied with Feisty by Dell and upgraded to Gutsey before the upgrade to 8.04. WiFi was faultless under previous Ubuntu versions.

I have no idea what has changed (an upgrade, possibly?) but the problem seems to have cleared. I don't think I altered anything, and I can't see any change in settings, but the system now picks up the WiFi connection faultlessly about four times in five. Not perfect, but a lot better than never connecting automatically. Roaming is still enabled, which is a change from the position with the previous version of Ubuntu. I'm perplexed, but reasonably happy now.
