Have you tried to make an update from Terminal?

If not just press Alt+F2 anf type gnome-terminal. After the Terminal has started type in:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Second message. Once I added updates after initial installation of 8.04 LTS I am not able to use add/remove, or open Synaptic package manager, or software source, or update manager. I have completely install Ubuntu 8.04 LTS several times and removed all data from the harddrive each time. Each time I get the same result. I have a Dell 1721, without the web camera, ATI video, I also am using the priority driver so I can use video in and out. I also using 64 bit mythbuntu on live cd.

I have no network problems, the software just acts like it waiting for authorization and the dots just travel around the circle indicating I guest the machine is not locked up. I can only get rid of the window about the updates by rebooting the computer.
