Try the "sudo lshw" command in Terminal and see if the usb device is detected.

Try "sudo lsusb" with and without the pen drive connected and see if it present on the usb bus. If not it is probably a hardware issue

i didnt really get what u were saying, so ive pasted the o/ps in both cases
w/o the pendrive connected:
varsha@varsha-laptop:~$ sudo lsusb
[sudo] password for varsha:
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

this is with the pendrive connd:
-ditto exactly as above-

So the pendrive is not detected by the bus. Does it work on other PC or other OSes (assuming you have any) on your PC?

yes it does. i have winxp on my pc and it works fine with that. but like i said, i used my usb mouse on my lappy and it worked, so i guess it isnt a problem with the port itself

Looks like a bug. See if a similar problem is reported in the bugs and if not report it as a bug. In the bug report give detailed specifications of your PC and you Pen drive

Can you help with this problem?
