It should start
/usr/sbin/gdmsetup
usually with gksu.
What does it say when you check the properties (right mouse-button on menu -> Edit Menus -> right mouse button on the "system>admin>login" -> Properties)?
This troubleshooting step would tell if something is wrong with the gdmsetup software or with the menu.

Michael

You cant login as root like that. The Root user is used to protect the system.
You can login as root in terminal using sudo sh and your password but there is no need to login as root for general use.

We need more information, Biley.
Why do you need admin privileges and why is it not working?

I am an architect. My entire office works on AutoCAD. The best alternative in Linux is BricsCAD which can handle .dwg files. I was trying to install Brics CAD V6 for Linux - .tgz version and it needs to be installed in /opt as per their installation instructions.

You can see installation instructions here http://www.bricsys.com/readme/en_US/B4L/Readme.htm

Now, all system files are locked and I cannot install or copy the program in /opt. Looks like only root can access. I have activated password for root. However, I need to activate root login. I understand that one of the possibility is by getting into system>admin>login window and it never comes on. When I click on it, it seems as if system is searching for the program and off.

By the way, Michael, when i right click on system>admin>login window it gives me only two options i.e. to add this launcher to panel / desktop. It doesnt offer a properties link.

Any possible solutions
a. to install/copy into /opt or
b. to login as root

(Sorry for silly questions friends, its been a while that i am out of linux (redhat 6.0), and now with Ubuntu 8.04, I am doing entire office work except CAD/3DStudio/Photoshop on it)

Hey friends,

I was able to open Login Window Screen once i completed the updates. Thanks a lot for the help. However, if you would have any suggestions to install in /opt, i am eagerly waiting.
