Nvidia issues and kernel version

Asked by randyleepublic

Hi all and thanks for having a look:

I posted the following on the Nvidia support forum:

I am running Ubuntu dapper. I have an Asus board with twin x16 pci-e slots rated at 8x electrical. I have two xfx 7600 gs cards with dual dvi heads. I have connected 4 samsung 1600x1200 Lcds to the two cards. Mostly screen 4, but the others also have the same issue: they go blank at random times and for random intervals. The first three usually just flash once in a while, but screen 4 really blanks out a lot. Help!! This is driving me nuts!

One of the forum moderators who is an Nvidia employee asked my why I am running such an old kernel. I responded that the kernel is the newest one that Ubuntu's package manager provides. She pointed me to kernel.org where they show 2.6.20 as the latest stable version.

Could someone either explain to a noob why ubuntu is not updating the kernel or help me with my screen problem. Or both, maybe...

Here is a link to the Nvidia thread where there is more detail on the screen problem: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1157866

Much thanks,

Randy Lee

You may want to have a go with Ubuntu 6.10, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EdgyUpgrades

Also, Feisty 7.04 will be ready in April.
