Pc Hangs at Random

Asked by Kev

Hi All
Been using Ubuntu Hardy for 4-5 months now and have enjoyed learning however....
Lately I have found that my PC will freeze, hang, stop working what ever the term is sometimes the mouse movement is the only thing that works no mouse button or keyboard function other times nothing works.

I had a P4 till last week and the i/o port on the mobo that the optical drives were on died so could not do a reinstall with live cd... this hanging problem was also on that machine. ( Nvidia FX5700VE video card) now have a new PC
MSI MOBO p35 Neo, E6850, 3 Gig DDR2 Ram, 512 Galaxy Gforce nvidia 8600DT card.

I thought great new machine no more problems... WRONG

This problem is worse...I think it is down to the Video card drivers... If this issue is not solved I will need to return to the dark side (XP) for stability... I am not even using the bells and whistles of Compiz. The Nvidia site says use this driver but how do I get it to install. NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run

Even if there is a generic pretend stable driver I will use it... I would like to stay with Ubuntu seeing as I have invested much learning time...... Thanking you in advance for your time to answer
PS how safe it is to reset PC when Ubuntu hangs when nothing works?

Try NV driver. I have similar problem in my compaq v3117LA presario nvidia GeForce Go 6150.

I disabled restricted drivers and my system run without problems. nvidia 173 drivers is not a solution

There are many reports about hardy freezing with nvidia-glx-new

Thanks Tito's
do you mean the driver from menu
applications - other - screens & Graphics menu
there I have selected the driver that says Geforce 8 series then
" nv - nVidia riva128, riva TNT GeForce... "and so on
I have selected a generic LCD panel as well with my selected resolution that I know my panel can handle
Thanks I will leave the question open at the moment and see if we get other answers I will close it later this week if nothing comes up.
