can not boot smoothly

hi
i hv old p4 pc installed ubuntu ultimate 1.6,
how can i add/remove programs and also i have bosss utility cd how can i add programm from cd
when i start pc after booting it shows monitor out off frequency and timer starts for 30sec, after 30 sec pc starts normally. this out of frequency massage in black back ground appears every time while restarting.
can anybody help

Hi nilesh,

I'm not a guru but I'm pretty sure that your graphic card doesn't support desktop effects.

About having kde instead of gnome... You can install kubuntu-desktop from Synaptic package manager, go to System menu and click on Synaptic Package Manager (could ask for your login password), there you can find de kubuntu-desktop package and install it. After rebooting, on the login screen, you can choose kde or gnome on the sessions menu.

On terminal:
$ glxinfo | grep rendering

If the answer is No then your graphic cards can not run compiz... sorry to hear that.
