Hi have you already tried to run:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

This should bring you tho the XServer configuration, maybe you can change the resoluion there.

Kind Regards
Pascal

install envyNG and update nvidia drivers using it... that might help. I think the problem is ubuntu nvidia driver installation is faulty... e.g. it does not let me install a nvidia driver (new or legacy version) with nvidia-settings package, but envgNG does that. So I run envyng after every kernel update.

I have a fix for this. Backup all data, and do a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) choosing the resolution you need from the VGA menu. Enable restricted drivers and reboot. If your monitor comes up with "Frequency out of range" or something similar, then press CTRL ALT and F1. Login, and type sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg From here you can setup your graphics card and monitor with the correct settings. When you are done type sudo reboot, and you're done.

I had the same problem, and after buying 2 graphics cards, and trying different settings, fixes and another monitor, it finally occured to me that Hardy's xserver has been somehow messed up. Doing a sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg in Hardy (at least for me) does not bring up any graphics settings at all, just keyboard settings.

Im almost certain this will fix your problem. Do a full update after you install Gutsy, but dont upgrade to Hardy until this issue is fixed.

Hope this helps. :)

Can you help with this problem?
