Help? Password login setup in simple terms please?

Asked by george_rutkay

This is related to my previous question at:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/36131

I tried using the advice at:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/howto/htaccess.html

and

http://www.linuxsecurity.com/content/view/133913/171/

It took me probably more than a month just to enable the computer to serve a directory to the internet through my firewall. I didn't know what to do about Apache (I didn't know it was called Apache2) and I don't have much time during my work days to mess with this and even less time during the weekends what with the work and family stuff and all.

Now I want to make sure only myself and those I set up will have login access. The language used in the documents from the above two websites is very foreign to me, so it makes it much harder to understand what the authors mean.

Can anybody help explain what I have to do (in plain English) to make my computer's website available on the internet to only those I set up a login for and block out everyone else?

Thank you.

I've just recently discovered (today in fact) that there are user groups in Canada - I never knew that!

So I've submitted my question to them.

I'll mark this as "solved" although I'm no closer to a solution. Eventually my hope is to take the knowledge I have gained from this and use it to set up a website (complete with a secure login) over at the family farm for their business.
