Got to Applications menu, accessories, Terminal and type

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f

That should sort it out.

Bhavani Shankar (bhavi) said : #2

Hello

Navigate to a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal) and give the below commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f upgrade

Bhavani Shankar.

griffyn@griffyn-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install-f

For efficiency it's also worth going to System menu, Administration, Software Sources
This sets where you will download software from.

Choose the Download Server and select "Other" then choose "Select Best Server".

This will then choose your closest Repository and refresh your repositories.

The best thing after this is to run a terminal window and then try

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Griffkyn (griffkyn) said : #5

ive been trying all of this but it continuously says

griffyn@griffyn-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
E: Type '“deb' is not known on line 64 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
griffyn@griffyn-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install-f
E: Invalid operation install-f
griffyn@griffyn-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
E: Type '“deb' is not known on line 64 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.

Griffkyn (griffkyn) said : #6

where can i find /etc/apt/sources.list (if i can change line 64) i think it might work?

Best Bhavani Shankar (bhavi) said : #7

Hello

You have added some incorrect lines to your file /etc/apt/sources.list, which probably should have been executed in a terminal instead.
To resolve this you need to edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and remove the referred line(s) that should not be there.
As a guide, sources.list should only contain lines that start "deb", "deb-src", "cdrom" or a "#" symbol, anything else is wrong and should not be there. Please refer to the error message, which should contain a line number.
To edit the sources.list file, press ALT+F2 at the Ubuntu desktop and then type the following command in the box, depending on your Ubuntu flavour:
For Ubuntu:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
For Kubuntu:
kdesudo kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
Exactly as you see it there, then press enter/return. Enter your password when prompted and edit the file in the editor as advised above. You should then save and quit the editor.
The program which reads /etc/apt/sources.list should work again.

For ubuntu 8.04 please paste the below:

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Alpha i386 (20080222)]/ hardy main restricted

If the Software Sources option above did not work for you try in a terminal window

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

and paste the result into this window for us to read.

I'm having the same problem. I tried installing playonlinux (trying to get wow installer to work...and it's not at all. the accept button the eula stays gray (im running it wine)) and after doing such, im getting the same problem with the major system failure.

this is what pops up for me as well:

"This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

so i run terminal and put in the sudo apt-get update and get this:
E: Type '--2009-02-14' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list

so i try to open my list files, and either that line itself isnt shown. I checked the net for an original source file and tried to copy and paste that in over the old one...and that did nothing to help either.

So i dunno, any suggestions?
oh and if someone can help me with the WoW thing, that'd be peachy too =)

When I run add/remove I get the following error
E: Type '<HTML>' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

There does not appear to be a problem with sources.list
