using wine with ubuntu

Asked by Janelle Simpson

I am a medical transcriptionist and would like to transition from my Windows 7 computer to Linux Ubuntu, rather than upgrading to either Windows 8.1 or 10, both of which I have heard very little good about. However, I have several different programs that i use for my job, and I have been unable to find comparable programs that run on Ubuntu.

My husband's computer runs on Ubuntu, which I transitioned to from Windows Vista. I would like to see if I could get the appropriate programs running on his computer before attempting to transition mine, since I have no idea if this will actually work.

I have a pretty good working knowledge of how Windows works, but very little with Ubuntu. The programs that I would need to work are:

Audioworx Player by Dataworx, or comparable program that plays audio files with a foot pedal
Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional
Gear Player by Transcription Gear, or comparable program that plays audio files with a foot pedal
Microsoft Word (or program that saves in .doc or .docx format
Program for zipping files

I have no idea where to start, but if someone could tell me if what I want to do is at least possible, that would be a start. I know some programs can be run using WINE, but I could not find any of these in the WINE app listing. Thank you!

Looking at what you need, what Ubuntu release is on your husband's computer? After reading about your requirements, I believe you will need Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus), the latest LTS. Also the latest LibreOffice 5.2.0. If your husband's computer is not running 16.04, I would suggest, a dual boot or VM on your Windows 7 computer, to find if it will work. You can look in software center, in 16.04, for zipping programs. While reading about using .doc and .docx files in LibreOffice, I noticed conflict in the answers of, if it will or will not work. Could not find anything about about your other requirements. Suggest you contact the companies that make programs, about compatibility with Linux.
