very low space in home folder

Asked by Padam

I have installed Ubuntu in my d: drive and I have free space of 24GB in this hard drive. When I start Ubuntu and check home folder, I can see only free space about 9.1GB. When I run windows xp I can see free space of 24 GB. Due to free space in home folder I am unable to use Linux in my way. Could anyone help me in this case, if possible how could I make more free space in home folder?

do you have a free space of 24gb in D: drive before installation of ubuntu or after installation?
do you install ubuntu using wubi or formatted the D: drive and install ubuntu?
if formatted how many partitions do you made?

Hi Bhuvi,
Thanks for your concern, well I have 24gb free space after I installed ubuntu. I installed ubuntu without formating hard drive. But I am not sure if it is wubi. Actually my friend gave me that CD and when I mounted it while runing windows xp, there were two options and I choosed install inside window. I don't have any partition in drive d; The CD I used was " Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Destop Edition".

Then you would have given the amount of disk space to be used for ubuntu. It will use only the allocated space and the remaining space in the drive will be free space.
Maybe you would have allocated 10GB for ubuntu installation

Yeah, this may be the reason. Is there any option to increase the volume size?

Hello padam

One thing you can do is delete some of your unwanted stuff if any in windows partition and then boot up with the ubuntu live CD and increase the space in your linux partition

More on partitioning with gparted (which comes with the ubuntu live CD)

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm

Note : Limits with gparted

To use space on a hard drive it must be in a partition, unallocated space is just that. If its not in a partition the space cannot be used.
Another limit is that the space allocated to any partition including an extended partition must be contiguous.
There is a limit of 4 primary partitions.
If you need more that 4 partitions only 1,2,or 3 of them can be primary and one must be an extended partition (you can have only one extended partition).
Once you create an extended partition it can be subdivided into as many logical partitions as needed. There is a limit it think 14 or so for sata drives and 50 or so for ide drives.

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

no once installed it cannot be changed. you have to uninstall and then reinstall.
i recommend you to install it in dedicated partition.
it is faster, data corruption can be and supports standby and hibernation modes.
if you install inside windows standby and hibernation are not supported.
