boot from external

finnaly got and external dvd drive so i could replace my OS, one isue tho. My bios dose not give me a option of booting from exturnal and just setting cd/dvd as the primary source dose nothing. i need this isue fixed asap. please e-mail me at <email address hidden> if there is any viable solution. note: please detail your answers so i can use them as a descent guide.
ps. don't know if it helps but i am runing a intel P3 chip. not sure on bios version only know it was issued in 2002
