Help with Problems associated with updates

Asked by huehueteot

When I use the updater it sucessfully downloads the available updates, un packs them and installs them, seemingly sucessfully but then it gives me the following list of errors. I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) and I am a newbie.

E: cman: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: fence: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: gulm: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: rgmanager: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: clvm: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: redhat-cluster-suite: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: system-config-cluster: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

I don't know what any of this is or where or how to address the problems. Can you help?

Addendum:

Checking my System/Administration/Disks shows me that the swap drive on my hda is full and unavailable. The format button is greyed out. I have a second harddisk but that one states that it is unavailable I can format it but that seems to do nothing. I removed the second drive but the machine would not boot until i put it back. Again I don't know what to do short of nuking the whole set up and starting over. I would rather not do that. Is there any way to fix this problem and is it related to the problem discussed above.

Wow that sure was interesting. Can you explain what I did? It didn't fix the problem but it sure gave more information on what is wrong. I copied the output of the Term session and will attach as an open office file. See attached. Can you explain what this said? It seems to boil down to the cman package not being properly installed. Some major part is missing and everything is dependent on that piece if I read it right. What do I do now?

 Cheers and Thanks!

 Hi:

Because I got a copy that didn't have the attached odt file I will try to cut and paste the text of the term session into this email. I don't know if you got the previous one that I sent with the attached file or if the file was just stripped out because of security concerns.

You may try to remove the package cman with

sudo dpkg --remove cman

and if that has problems

     sudo dpkg --remove --force-all cman

(The package is the cluster manager, I don't believe you run a cluster here, so you shouldn't need it anyway)

After this you should repeat the previous procedure

     sudo apt-get update
     sudo dpkg --configure -a
     sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

There you can see if you have another problematic package, or paste the output here again

Ok, tried that. See the results below. The problem seems to be that the package is not there and something in the updater expects it to be and when it can't find it stops and issues the errors. You are right I don't have any clusters so why this is happening is a question.

Hi. I have a problem with the update manager ie:-
"Software index is broken

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first."

Tried that and also the apt-get upgrade as shown below.

smee@dell-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Password:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

smee@dell-desktop:~$ dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege
smee@dell-desktop:~$

Read abt my password being OK to use but that does not appear to work ???

Any help will be appreciated..... Hermann

You need to prefix dpkg with "sudo".

sudo dpkg --configure -a

And when prompted, enter your own password.

If I read this correctly cman is not actually installed on my machine but somehow the updater thinks that it is. I am guessing that what I need to do is edit the list of progams installed and remove all refrferences to cman and related systems in the error message. I would need advice as to where to do that, how to do it and what to look out for ie pitfalls in dong this kind of thing. Or alternatively would it be possible to backup my personal files on this system on cd or dvd and reinstall the opperating system. I would like to do that as I installed the incorrect system, in that I used the 386 version instead of the 686 version shich the setups seys I should have used.

Cheers,

Sam

use any of the above uninstall commands (sudo apt-get remove it's ok)

and after (VERY important)

cd /bin
