Application moves files to Trash

Asked by burton82

Hi!
is it possible to force applications to use the trash instead of delete files permanently?
I heard something about a kernel modification. But iam not sure if that is a good option.

To which application are you referring? I think many apps will move files to the trash first. The question, however, is which trash? As far as I can tell there are two. One is simply a hidden folder called ".Trash" in the user's home folder. This was the default trash for the Nautilus file manager until Hardy. Now it seems to use .local/share/Trash/. I think this is the path developers are wanting people to use but not all apps put deleted files there. If you open the trash on Hardy it is that path but some apps will still move to .Trash so you won't see those in the "trash can". There could be other locations too. There is a bit of inconsistency here.

If you delete files via the terminal with "rm" then they do not go to any trash (although I think you can change that but it's a bit of scripting I think) so be careful doing it that way.

the accident today happend with f-spot. I marked to many photos and use the "delete from harddisk" button. But there is no file in .Trash or in .local/share/Trash/. . I wrote them a bugreport but it will be a great feature if someone has a solution to force applications to use a specific trash.

Hi burton82,

Try looking at this directory: /home/<username>/.local/share/Trash/files.
