Does Kubuntu need to fully installed to pick up devices on USB?

Asked by SKay

Hi there, a few questions to help me use Kubuntu as my one and only OS.

I don't know if this can be answered as the 1st item in question is a South African software product (3G vodacom).

On my Boot options usb is active, I run Kubuntu in Safe graffics mode (with out changes not installed as yet) as I need to get Nvidia drivers to run the in normal mode.
when on Kubuntu I inserted my HSDPA 3G vodacom card it runs on a USB and nothing happens, Iplayed around on the menu's to look if the distro picked it up but there is nothing. I know this software is made for Windows, I really need to get this to work on linux as this will be my only way of connecting to the Internet.

1) So how do I get do I get this to work, do I need to first do a full instilation of Kubuntu in order for the USB's to work?

I have done a CD check on the startup menu and there are no errors found.

I did start the instillation after the above then backed out when it asked me to partition the drives 50% was for something like dsa/sra and 50% for Kubuntu I was confused at this point and tried the help menu but it just freezes there and the mouse pointer becomes a no entry sign then when I click on back it unfreezes again, I also searched for USB under the main help files and Add/remove section but it found nothing.

2) Is this defult partitioning ok, and if I should do the partition will I be able to run XP on the spare partion at a later stage again?

3) Why are the Help files not comming up during the presteps to instillation?

4) I did see that the resolution option end at 800-600 will it be able to to go to 1280-800 once the graphics card is working cause it is far to big on it's current setting?

I hope my answer will help to use Kubuntu as your only OS...

1) It may be possible to get the card to work before you do a full instalation but it may not work as well. So I suggest that you do a fulll install and then follow this guide : http://www.tectonic.co.za/wordpress/?p=1596

2) If you want to keep Windows, it's better that you do the partitioning yourself. (Ask me if you have doubts on how to do it correctly!)

3) I can't understand what Help files you are talking about...

4) I don't know what video cardo you got but after installing Kubuntu and an updated driver, you shold be able to set it correctly...

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I figured a full instillation will do the trick and I did Google and find the artical and the drivers for both the 3G card and the Nvidia graghics card.

The help files are the one's during the instilation proccess it first takes you through the 6 steps there is a help icon. this was the one that just freezes so that's why I asked why there are no help file's

Thanks again!

Hi again,

Where can I get info (Manual) on the details of the programs and applications as well as linux lingo and the "how to" of linux (Kubuntu 8.04)? the help files are limited plus search button on kubunt is not clickable, how do I solve this?

I feel like a kid learning to drive for the first time!

It' good to hear someone so interested as you!!

When I begun using Ubuntu, a common stop for me was this site: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy

There is also a lot of info on the ubuntuforums. Check it out : http://ubuntuforums.org/
Just read the question other people do (and of course the answers, :P)

About the help files, I suppose they aren't installed by default and maybe you to install the documentation for yourself... I can't really tell.

Sorry, but I can't understand your 3rd question!! :)

Can you help with this problem?
