I'm not sure about others, but this has always seemed to be something controlled by the monitor to me.

If you have the NVidia settings manager (I'm not sure if there's an equivilent for ATI cards) that has a brightness setting that you should be able to use.

Cheers,

Matt

I've just noticed that there's a brightness menu applet in feisty.

I'm not sure about edgy though.

I believe that when you are using the dedicated keyboard controls for brightness it is all done in hardware(could be model dependent). For example, my Compaq Evo N1020v has these controls on the laptop using the function key. This controls the brightness regardless of the operating system as I can adjust the brightness even before any operating system has started. In this case, it would be a feature of the computer model hardware, nothing to do with software. With the volume buttons, it actually sends a command to the OS to handle the volume adjustment, again this could possibly be system hardware dependent.

so there is no hope for it to show on-screen brightness level?

If you can adjust the brightness even before the operating system loads, and it is not a feature of the computers BIOS to have the brightness displayed, I believe that the answer is no.
