Installing ubuntu on Dell latitude pentium 3 laptop c610

Asked by mrlopes

Hi...
I've asked this question before but answer was too complicated.

I'm trying to put Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 on my Dell Latitude laptop c610.
Pentium 3
20GB hard disk

I'm using a live CD that i've used to put on another laptop (NOT DELL) and it worked ok.

When i start (select RUN UBUNTU 8.04 FROM LIVE CD), It gets to the part where the screen is black with the little white dash flashing.
After 5 mins an error message comes up
"[ 58.574614] Buffer i/o error on device fdo, logical block 0"
"[ 58.750668] Buffer i/o error on device fdo, logical block 0"
_

Is it even possible to have ubuntu on this laptop?

Please make it as simple as you can. Newbee : )

Please help................

The laptop may have an issue with the default set of drivers or kernel options loading by default on the Desktop CD. You can try disabling ACPI from the CD's boot options, or perhaps trying to use the "Alternate" install disc.

You can obtain the Alternate install disc from any of the mirrors.

e.g. http://mirrors.us.kernel.org/ubuntu-releases/hardy/ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso

This installs Ubuntu using a minimal menu system versus a Live CD environment. This typically yields better results on otherwise problematic systems.

Good luck.
