GoogleEarth Error:29

Asked by David

I installed Google Earth in Ubuntu 8.04. When I launch the program I get the following message:
GoogleEarth detected an error while trying to authenticate. Please check the following:
Your network connection. (can you get to www.google.com)
Your firewall settings. (you are blocking /home/davial/Google-Earth/Googleearth-bin)

Error code:29

Thanks in advance.

David

Hello David

1. Install GE 4.3 via Synaptic Package Manager (rather than from Google)
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install googleearth-4.3

2. At this point, you get Error 29 and no connection

3. Run sudo apt-get install lib32nss-mdns (On 64 bit i think)
More info on installing software:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware

4. Error 29 is gone, but no earth appears as user. Only sudo googleearth works.

5. Remove .config/Google and .googleearth from your home directory and restart googleearth

Also if you have firestarter I'd like to encourage you to remove firestarter completly.

Just use Synaptic or "Add/Remove Programms". If you like the console, run: "sudo apt-get remove --purge firestarter".

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

Many thanks Bhavani,

this worked beautifully on Ubuntu 8.4 . The 'lib32nss-mdns' missing seemed to be the trouble on my machine. Installing the library and deleting ./googleearth and ./config/Google cured the 'error 29' on my 64 bit xbuntu 8.04
