Which Ubuntu server edition for PowerPC

Asked by alodey

I have a Bull Escala 3xxx server machine that although long in the tooth, is fully functional. The native OS for this machine is AIX 4.3 but I would like to move to Ubuntu if possible. Can anyone advise which late Ubutu distro might work on this hardware?
Thanks in anticipation!

I've never seen a Bull Escala, but from various web pages it seems to be a PReP platform from the days when rebadged/slightly modified IBM PReP machines were common. According to the release notes Ubuntu 6.10 is likely to install on it, but since then the entire PPC port has become a community distribution and I doubt that much PReP testing takes place. I think your best bet would be to start with 6.10 and do careful upgrades, because even if the installer (or even yaboot) is broken on later versions, there is a lot less to go wrong with binary packages.
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPC and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads .
