How do I improve bad wi-fi reception on my laptop?

Hey everyone,

I just installed Ubuntu Studio onto my laptop in replace of Windows 10. I have been having wi-fi problems ever since I made the switch. I can connect to my wireless network and access the internet, but it frequently drops connection (maybe 4 or 5 times per hour) and the signal strength is around -64 dBm (2 bars).

I use music streaming apps like Spotify during the day, and it's horrible because the music always stops, I get an "offline" message every few minutes, and trying to watch videos online is not possible unless I use the lowest quality.

What can I do to improve this? Could it be a driver issue?

try:

echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9kfix.conf > /de/null

reboot to test. If things aren't better, run:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ath9kfix.conf

Then re-reboot

There is wireless interference (several access points on channels 6 and 11!)

Please log into your wireless router using a working, WIRED Internet connection and using a webbrowser.

Then change the wireless transmission channel to channel 1 in order to avoid the wireless interference from the other access points nearby....

Then retest wireless.

I tried running the command that you suggested, actionparsnip, and I got this: bash: /de/null: No such file or directory

I set my wireless channel to channel 1, but so far I haven't seen a difference.

I also tried channel 6 without any change. I even moved my laptop to the location of my wireless modem, and it gave me one extra bar. But that's just 3 out of 5.

So I ran the code in the terminal, and haven't had much luck. However, I did get better reception when moving closer to the router. Not full bars, but I can at least use it on my laptop. So I'm thinking about moving my router into my office.

I am having one other problem that just started. My wifi keeps disconnecting, and prompting me to re-enter the wifi password. This happens frequently. Any idea on how to fix that?
