How to change back to old kernel ubuntu 14.04

I have Ubuntu 14.04. I had an update and now I cannot access the unity desktop. All I can see is a blank desktop that has 3 files I had saved to it. But no icons and can't get to any files or folders. The only thing that works is the guest desktop.

Is there any way to fix this?

this does not work. I tried it. I tried clicking on the older versions but it does not change anything.
I still cannot access the unity desktop on the admin side of the computer.

Can you give me more exact instructions please?
