Panel

Asked by bolobill

Since updating Ubuntu earlier today, I have lost the panel at the bottom which lists what windows I have open (ie, Foxfire, flashdrive, open office, etc.). They used to be on a panel at the bottom, and I could freely move from one to the other without closing any down. Now, if I minimize a window, it disappears from view, and cannot be brought back up.

How can I restore that panel to the way it was?

Thank you in advance for assistance with this matter.

Hello

Looks like updates have messed up your ubuntu desktop..

Course to a terminal (Press cntrl + alt +f1 or f2 in the login screen) Or boot up in recovery mode (Usually 2nd option in grub menu)

and give the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop

and

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

and reboot your system..

sudo reboot

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.

I am not sure what most of that means. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year, and it has been relatively user-friendly until now. But I do not know what a grub menu is. Could you describe it in more simple terms?

Thank you.

Grub menu is the bootloader screen you get while booting ubuntu and the screen which lets you select ubuntu before booting into ubuntu

Okay, I try and do this, but it keeps asking me for a password. What next? Is there just some simple way that I can add a panel that I can set up to show the information that I want?

you can right click on the panel at the top of your screen and goto "new panel", one should be created at the bottom. on that you can right click and goto "add to panel" add "window list" to the panel (and any others you want). and it should all be fine again

I have no problem creating a new panel; however, if I open a document, it does not show it on the panel, or if I am using a Firefox page, and looking up a file on the hard drive, it used to show each of those on a panel so that I could easily go from one to the other just by clicking on the icon on the panel. It no longer does this.

How do I get the panel to display those files that I have open?

Thank you.

Okay, I guess that I am not making myself clear.

I used to have two panels at the bottom of the screen; one shows applications, trash, volume control, date, etc. The second was blank until I opened a document or an application, and it would show what was actually open at that time. I could then click on that application and it would bring that window to the forefront.

This feature is gone. Now, if I minimize something, like Foxfire, it is still there, but disappears from the screen and there is no way to recall it.

Does anybody know how I can recreate that panel again?

Thank you in advance.
