System crash during update for Hardy Heron

Asked by GZ Expat

I am a very new user to Ubuntu and Linux...so bear with me.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 using the Wubi partition. I had everything running very well...no problems. Last night, there were several updates that I had been putting off and finally clicked for the updates to install and walked away from the computer while it did its thing. Sometime during the night, I lost connection and power and I woke up to Windows XP. I rebooted to bring Ubuntu back and all I got was a black screen.

Here's where I probably did somethign stupid. Since I hadn't used it too long, I just thought I would uninstall and re-install the original package (because it worked). Same. Black screen. Doesn't even get to the installation package.

Now, I'm really frustrated...I really liked Ubuntu...but I still needed Windows for some programs that just don't work with Linux...and now I cannot get Ubuntu reinstalled at all. I know there is some sort of code, somewhere, that is botching the whole thing up, and I don't even know where to start.

if you really like ubuntu you could repartition your hard drive to make a little space for it and install Ubuntu properly in its own partition. Since you are running Xp its relatively simple and doing a new install of ubuntu using the live cd or alternate installer will set you up with a working dual boot system. If you need more help in setting up for dual boot feel free to post over in the Ubuntu Community Forums, there are quite a few nice tutorials there and lots of people willing to lend a hand.

I've contemplated this. Question...my hard drive is already partitioned into 48G chunks...if I install ubuntu and I choose one of those partitions...will it leave the remainder fo the hard drive alone?

You can install Ubuntu to any partitions you want - you will need a root (/) partition and a swap partition, and possibly a /home partition if you are interested in that. The advantage to a /home partition is you can reinstall the base system without losing your configurations or personal files. Ubuntu will install GRUB to the MBR, taking it over from Windows, but you can still access Windows from GRUB - that is a true dual boot.

Can you help with this problem?
