File system locked

Asked by Daniel

On my desktop there is the icon of My Computer. I press it in order to see all the files. Under Home folder I can see the files that I wrote or made.

But when I press File System I can't see the hard disks! (I partitioned the other hard disk which has windows XP and I tried to see it in Linux Ubuntu too).

Now it seems that there is a sign of a lock next to the File system. I can't unlock it. If I press right click, I find properties. If I look for permissions it tells me that I'm not the owner!!! What can I do to unlock it and see the hard disks?

I know that they are ok with ubuntu because I've seen them from the terminal window but I need to see them from the desktop too in order to put some common files for both windows and ubuntu in this newly created partition.

I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and gnome 2.16.1 I use dual boot (XP and Ubuntu). Thanks for your patience!

Did you try to look at the /media/ folder on your computer (on your Ubuntu Partition) ? Please tell us what there is in.

Type in a terminal (In gnome's menu Applications>Accessories>Terminal I think) "gedit /etc/fstab" and copy us what there is in it. Thanks.

The root filesystem is not locked it is just not writable by you. This is a good thing, dont try to change that. Its protecting the system from accidental damage.

See the following page for details of mounting other partitions:-

Nicolas,

In media I can see 4 things: CDROM0, CDROM1,FLOPPY, FLOPPY0.

Now I'm reproducing what you have requested:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/hdb1
UUID=465b90e5-997c-43c6-9465-068920ec6c4a / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/hdb5
UUID=70e15923-8340-42b3-bd39-26671e7f4050 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdd /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/ /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

Alan,
To mount disks, I have enabled the Gnome Partition Editor. The only problem is that when I see the other hard disk (160GB) where Win XP is installed, it seems to format the whole hard disk! Is it possible to format only a part of it as Fat 32 ? It is in NTFS. If yes, how?

It's possible, but risky and not easy. If you need write access to your NTFS partitions from Ubuntu, maybe you want tray Captive (http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/)
Another solution would be to gain read/write access to your etx3 filesystem in Windows:
http://www.fs-driver.org/

It's free/gratis, but not free/libre

Solves that your problem?

(and sorry, English isn't my mother-tongue)

I am a total Ubuntu n00b. I have to say I hate it so far, and if I have to write commands, tweak, hack or crack much more now, I will probably put Windows back in.

My current problem is: how do I create folders? I am trying to create a folder in any one of my HDs which is in NTFS format (i think). When I right click, the "create a folder" option is disabled.

Please help me to create a folder.

Can you help with this problem?
