Not sure what the default shortcuts are as I don't have them but you can use alsamixer form the terminal.
Open aterminal and run

alsamixer

you can get the volume with that, also if you're running hardy there are the pulseaudio controls.

Also if you open keyboard shortcuts in sys - prefernces menu you can see what you have as shortcuts for volume.

Ok Rodney13,

Which PC are you using IBM / SONY VAIO / DELL / any other ?

Mine is Sony vaio CR 320. After installing Ubuntu I am able to operate sound with multimedia keys provided on keyboard by sony.

One more option (not working for me ) I see in Ubuntu is to traverse

System -> Preference -> Keyboard Shortcuts and modify the details of volume up / Down. But in my pc by default i have these values in Keyboard Shortcuts display.

Volume mute - 0xa0
Volume down - 0xae
volume up - 0xb0

I don't know what do they mean but this may help you in any case.

Hi Rodney13,

Again i'm, here is the link which clearly states how to identify magic key of your keyboard keys and to how to configure all keys.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch

Its from Ubuntu documentation, please go through slowly which will surely help you.

Since I dont know about your laptop/pc configuration, this is the only way i can help you.

It might have helped if you said that you ran Xubuntu - most people appear to use Ubuntu - consequently answers are pointed in that direction.

Searching for volume control on xubunut there was a lot of refeernce to this page, maybe it'll help
