trash will not delete

Asked by nobodie

Ubuntu HH 8.04, i386, fully updated as of today, june 6 2008.
Here is the problem: I put a small, unimportant text file into trash can on Desktop.
Then I (foolishly I admit) removed the trash applet from the toolbar at the bottom of the page: the textfile was still in it
I reinstalled the applet/ icon on the toolbar, the icon shows a file present in the trash.
right click>empty trash grinds a bit and then ends without message
left click>empty trash closes without message (this shows the text file still in the trash)
/home/<user>/.Trash-1000/files is empty, as is /info (show hidden files is checked)
Curious enough? now it gets weird:
On start-up, the icon shows no contents until the extra drives and nfs file shares are added (I have 5 extra volumes: three drive partitions and two nfs shares. The drive partitions, while housed on this box are also nfs shared drives across the network. The "network" includes another deskbox and a laptop, thus the two other nfs shares. pretty simple kind of shared service)
Just to really confuse me, I came back from a business trip last night and discovered that the trash bin on the laptop and the other deskbox now also show the file in that bin and it is also undeletable there as well, and not resident in the .Trash-1000 file for them either.
There are no other /.Trash files in the ~ although there used to be a ~/>Trash-<user> folder as well. Neither of these two computers has the <user> .Trash now only the -1000.
Before I left on the business trip I removed the trash icon from the toolbar. I left it off while gone, used the .Trash folder to empty the trash for a few cycles and restarted a few times before reinstalling the icon. Well, of course it was the same old thing.
What logs can I provide you with?
Thanks

Problem solved:
The original file was in one of the volumes. I searched the volume's trash and found it there, tried to delete and it wouldn't. So I unmounted the volume. It gave the offer to empty the trash, which I accepted. Then it refused to unmount (permissions) and I said OK. But the trash deleted from all the bins on all the computers. Obviously the bin with the trash being shared was screwed up by the trash applet thing. An interesting little thing, but probably of no great value to anyone.
