Wireless? How to begin?

Asked by guidemeintheeyesofblindness@yahoo.com

Hello I just re-installed gutsy on my old pc. This time I did not partition the hard drive. I clicked "guided" and totally overwrote everything. I'm 100% ubuntu!

My home has a wireless qwest system which a laptop in another room connects to via "Airport". The transmitter is next to our primary home p.c.

Question: How do I configure my old desktop p.c. to connect wirelessly to the internet with 7.10 gutsy?
Would a wireless usb stick work? I have been looking through this list:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported

Where do I begin?

Richard

Yeah, go ahead with a wireless USB stick. But first download and install Ubuntu 8.04 if you have no pressing reason to stick with the older Gutsy.

I hope your qwest WLAN is secured by a pass phrase or key. You'll need that information to be able to connect to the WLAN.

Thanks! Hmm.. how do I find out if it's protected by a password or key? There is a key on the side of the transmitter tower.

Updating to 8.04 is a snap, no problem.

Anyone have any suggestions on a good wireless stick?

You will find out about the protection when you try to connect to it. There is no physical key, but more a password made up of random numbers.

What is the "transmitter tower" ???

I always liked NetGear equipment...

I don't know what you call it but I have heard it referred to as a tranmitter tower. It the transmitter box that sits next to our pc. It's got the phone lines going in and out of it. It's where our wireless signal is broadcast from.

It's got a key right on the side of it. It's a series of numbers. I'm wondering if it's the key needed for internet connection.

It's a "2wire" brand.
