I bought a C2D two years ago. Then the situation was horrible. Not due to the prosessor but the new chipsets. Nearly all the motherboards lost support for native ATA, there was ATA but it was kind of emulated through SATA or something. BUT this only prevented installation from ATA CD drives or using ATA harddisks. But existing installations worked fine. Kubuntu FEISTY was the first to install on my C2D machine...

In short, any recent (past 2 years) distribution should work. With recent enough kernel!
