Installation goes to E:\ drive instead of C:\ drive; "failed in buffer_read(fd)"

Asked by Ryan

I just started using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). Nothing will install; updates or software. It says:

"E:/var/cache/apt/archives/bash_3.2-0ubuntu18_i386.deb: failed in buffer_read(fd)"
"E: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox-2_2.0.0.14+2nobinonly-0ubuntu1_i386.deb: failed in buffer_read(fd)"

I have an external drive hooked up to it, my E-drive. The internal hard drive is the C-drive. It should be running and searching for everything on the C-drive. I do not know how to change the settings on the install. Can anybody help? I would appreciate it.

Hi Ryan,

Can you please answer few queries before we answer your question.

1. Are you trying to freshly install Ubuntu / trying for dual boot ?
2. Have you downloaded latest version of Ubuntu ? (Because, I observe the problem is from bash-ubuntu debian package ?).
3. Did you format your drive partition before installing ? Better not to use quick format in this case.
4. Are you using any Thirdparty tools like partition magic to format your drive ? Since above error is related to buffer_read i suspect if any memory corruption happend while formating by thirdparty tools.
Note: If you are using windows vista better to use memory management tool provided by windows vista to shrink your hard drive.

1. Freshly installing Ubuntu.
2. I am using 8.04, is there a different version I should be using?
3. I formated the drive using full format.
4. I used the partition tool on the Ubuntu CD that I downloaded. The drive did have errors on it from a time that XP crashed. But my Ubuntu reads the drive as 13.6 GiB. That's what a "15 GB" drive should be, right?

Do you think it would work if I reinstall the whole OS? Recommendation? Thanks for your help so far.

PS: I have no use for that Vista junk, Ubuntu is much better. ;)

Hi Ryan,

We are not able to trace out the root cause. So better way
I suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x), here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto, the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/

If you are in trouble to download you can try to install and use a torrent client Deluge http://www.deluge-torrent.org/downloads.php to get
your desired Ubuntu iso image http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/ please select a .torrent file
