no desktop

I've installed 8.04 twice and when I start Ubuntu all I get is a dark screen with a blinking cursor. Am I missing part of the program. I got the CD from Canonical.

Does it install with no errors? Press Ctrl_Alt_F1 (to F6) to get into tty1-6 and there, type: startx

Dave: I don't know what changed but I got called away when I was starting the program and when I got back the desktop was there. Thanks for the help. Now I just have to figure out how to get my modem recognized.
