cannot open directory .: Permission denied

here is the exact issue

 I have trouble running "ls" on my own PC

alfred@alfred-desktop:~$ ls
ls: cannot open directory .: Permission denied

What did I do wrong?

try doing 'sudo su' and then try 'ls'

when i perform sudo -s . I can run "ls" as root, however i use to be able to do it before (not as root)
