Step-daughter cannot login via her laptop?

Asked by george_rutkay

She can use the Network browser in her XP Home edition to see her shared music folder on the network at home here.

When she double-clicks on it, it asks her for a login and password.

So sure, we both assumed it would be the same that she uses when she logs into the Dell computer running Ubuntu.

Wrong!

What's going on? Did it set up it's own password and tell nobody?

I'm looking at the /etc/samba/smb.conf file now and it doesn't really help me.

HELP please?

Thanks!

To make it clear....this is related to the setting up music share folder question I posted earlier.

I figure she can keep her computer cleared up drive space and we just set up the Dell as a server for sharing these music files of hers. She can connect to it, we map it on her XP laptop as a drive, tell the music program to look there for songs and Bob's your uncle!

When she's trying to log-in, what I mean specifically is that she's trying to access the Dell computer via the home network (wireless) and access the shares music files I have on her account under Ubuntu 7.10.

She can still log-in directly when she's sitting at the Dell's keyboard but that's not the point, she needs to be able to access her music files via the wireless network from her XP laptop, ideally without any password or login required.

Can anybody help please?

Thanks for the question.

Depending on how the shared folder on the other computer is configured she need to authenticate herself there. Therefore, neither username nor password must necessarily be the same as the ubuntu laptop.

The easiest might be that she has a username and password on the XP machine and uses those on the login popup that appears when she clicks on the shared network drive.

I hope this helps.

I've set the systems up so the Dell desktop running Ubuntu and her XP laptop have both identical login and passwords. Under these conditions when she tries to log-in to her shared folder visible on her XP laptop via the "My network places" icon, she is unable to log-in.

I'm at home now, I've tried it again. She can see the Ubuntu computer and it's Samba share on the network. From her computer if she double-clicks on the icon to access her shared files, it prompts her for a log-in.

She tries it and it is not successful. No error message is given. The log-in popup window for her access simply keeps prompting her for a password and when she enters the only password on the system (both passwords for her between Ubuntu and Windows are identical), it just repeats itself to no end.

What has gone wrong?

I am not using Windows anymore, therefore I am update to speed with it, but didn't you have to use a "share password" in the home edition, i.e. you can not use the user name to access shares, but a password given to the share?

Just a thought.

I was looking at the laptop last night, I didn't come across anything like this in XP Home.

I have faced this problem before. Its related to samba server setting in Linux. Usually while installing samba package you will be prompted to enter username and password. If not then follow this procedure https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba.

Use "sambapasswd" to set new password.

Thanks Murali Krishna Marimekala, that solved my question.

That was it - I had to create her login and password within Samba by first using "sambapasswd". Now it works and I was able to map a network drive for her so she can access her music files on this computer via the network.
