HP 1100 stops printing after 17 jobs

Asked by Gerard Pasman

HP 1100 laserjet, connected on par. port on Thinkpad R50e, stopped printing after 17 jobs. Distribution Edubuntu 6.06. In a logfile I find: "local authentication certificate not found". This is the second installation of edubuntu because the first installation had the same problem. Deleting the printer and adding it again does not help. (fedora did not have this problem). The driver is HPLIP 0.9.7. (recommended).
What can I do to solve this problem?

In System --> Administration --> System log, can you open the log file /var/log/cups/error_log, access_log and page_log and see any further errors?

Are the jobs still in the queue - i.e. do you still have a printer icon on the toolbar which you can click and see a list of jobs?

Thank you for answering
In first lines of error_log:
  "Cups-Delete-Printer : Unauthorized"
  "Cups-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized"
In last three lines of error_log:
  "local authentication certificate not found"
  "Creating missing directory /var/run/cups/certs"
"[Job40] no %%Bounding Box: comment in header!"
in acces_log:
  "Post /HTTP/1.1 200 126 Get-Jobs succesful - OK"
in page_log:
hp1100 user34 [05 /Feb/2007:07:35:11 + 0100] 11 - localhost
Your second question: all jobs were cancelled

The OpenPrinting database indicates there is more than one driver that may work with this printer. I suggest you at least try one of these other drivers to see if they give better output. Its possible the driver you are using is sending some screwy postscript commands to the printer.

Possibly use the ljet4 driver if available?

I followed your advice. The printer was still not working. So I decided to a new install of Edubuntu.
Everything is working OK now. I hope the printer will go on working with every job in the future.
Thanks for your help.
