Remote Desktop?

Asked by george_rutkay

I already know that I can log-in to a Windows machine from Ubuntu (I prefer using Gnome-RDP) and it works very well!

I'd like to know if the reverse is possible - for a Windows user to log-in via The Remote Desktop program included with Windows XP Home edition to the Linux box and run a Linux session within the Remote Desktop?

Any thoughts?

What is NX? I've never heard of that, except as a name of some running shoe or sports car?

it's a performant way of forwarding X over shh. achives quite what you want.
have a look at:
http://www.nomachine.com/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1968

i did not get freenx running, though, only the officual nomachine version...

So would this be installed on the UBuntu machine or on the XP machine?

I've noticed that there's a great lack of SSH programs available for XP Home edition (for my step-daughter's laptop to log-in to the Ubuntu machine).

I'm sure her XP laptop wouldn't have SSH installed. Will this be a problem?

you'd have have to install the server part on the unbuntu machine and the client part on the windows machine. it brings its own ssh client. but if you are working in a LAN only, you can try a plain vnc setup, too.

I've set up NX on both machines. And from the Win XP laptop I am able to log-in and access all of her files and her account on the Ubuntu "server" (he he).

One thing......I need her to be able to transfer files from one computer to the other.

In the Windows environment running Remote Desktop, you can just copy and paste any file you want from one desktop to the other - the files transfer. I did this at the farm over the 1 km wireless link and they were so surprised that it worked!

I find that when the XP laptop is running NX and is logged-in to the Ubuntu system via the network, it is not possible to cope and paste or otherwise transfer any file at all between desktops.

This is crucial - since I cannot RDP to her laptop* I need a way for her to be able to log-in to her account and access (read-write) to her files in her account.

*(Apparently XP Home edition on her laptop doesn't support it and it's silly to fork more $$ over just to upgrade that thing to XP Pro when it's already slow enough on XP Home edition).

How can I copy & paste or otherwise transfer files between the NX shell within Windows and the actual Windows OS?

Hi george_rutkay,

I have answred to the same for your new query related to your samba server settings in your linux laptop. The same solution works here.

Windows has a good ssh program which works very well and its freely downloadable at

http://www.colorado.edu/its/docs/authenticate/win_ssh.html

I finally got Samba to behave and share files to her computer like it's supposed to - installing Webmin helped me, as well as installing System/Administration/Samba control widget. Otherwise it's like pulling teeth.
