computer hates linux, wont load linux ubuntu

Asked by rodney13

when i try to preview Linux on my computer (i don't want to install it yet as my files are not backed up), it loads the menu thing and i choose 'try Ubuntu without changes to my computer', it loads brings up a dialog box saying running in low graphics mode. first i choose continue, i could here Ubuntu making noises but i couldn't see anything, the screen had a warning saying resolution out of range max resolution 1024 x 768, which was wot it was supposed to be running Ubuntu in.
second, third, four, fifth, etc time i choose configure, i found my SIS 6326 AGP with accelerator graphics card and driver, but my dell 1707fpt screen wasn't on the list, so i choose similar ones each time and none worked the computer tried to load and just stopped. my computer is pretty crap but it satisfies Ubuntu's system requirements pretty easily.

help i really want to try and probably install eventually.

thanks

The Ubuntu LiveCD does not work for everybody, usually because of graphics problems. Your video card is not one of the more common types (ati, nvidia, intel), so the LiveCD will have to run in low graphics mode, and may not even work. There is an "sis" driver, but since it is not common, is not available when using the LiveCD, so you will be unable to test Ubuntu this way.

If you do decide to install anyway, after your files are backed up, you can use the alternate install cd available at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download by checking the box at the bottom for the alternate install cd. This uses a text based installer rather than a live session, but it is still intuitive and easy to use.

Your video card should work after you install, though you probably won't be able to get special desktop effects with Compiz Fusion.
