how to format external hard drive

how do i format or reformat a maxtor external hard drive useing ubuntu 8.04 and how do i do the same to a sata mini potable hard drive

Open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type

sudo apt-get install gparted
sudo gparted

This will let you see the gparted tool which displays and allows you to format partitions on all detected drives.

** Be careful, as you can completely wipe a hard-drive with this, make sure you select the correct one ***

I downloaded a program called disks from MUON and it was a lot simpler for me to use than gparted.
