What nvidia card do you have?

I would recommend that you go to Applications menu, add/remove and then search for "nvidia"

You are looking for one of the drivers there depending on what your nvidia card is.

After that, you also need to go to system menu, administration, hardware drivers and ensure that the driver you selected is present and enabled.

This should be enough for you to get the nvidia drivers working for your card.

Forget about downloading and installing the driver ---> go to System→Hardware Drivers (or "Restricted Driver Manager" for Ubuntu 7.10 and older) and there choose the driver to be installed...
