Ubuntu 8.04 asking user name and password

Asked by NicholasA

Trying Ubuntu 8.04 from a live CD. It asks for a user name and a password. No matter what I type I get an error about cases having to match. Match what? I never entered a user name and a password.

I have a multi-boot machine which includes XP (I try not to use it), Fedora 8 and Ubuntu-Studio 7.10. My machine includes an SATA drive and an EIDE drive, although I can't imagine that these would be causing Ubuntu to ask for a user name and password.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Try with:

username: ubuntu
password: ubuntu

This is the default username and password's Ubuntu live CD .

Best regards.

Thanks for the help but it didn't work. "ubuntu" was one of the first ones I tried, but should it even be asking for a user name and password with what is supposed to be a live CD?

I also tried Ubuntu inside the XP partition, entering the user name and password when asked for them. After the installation and rebooting it asked for the UN & password, but would not except them. Error" Incorrect user name and password. Letters must be typed in correct case."

I did a clean install of Hardy Heron in an empty Linux partition. I asked the partitioner to put the Grub installer in /def/sda9, the empty partition. After the installation, I rebooted the machine and mounted that partition so that I could take a look at /boot/grub menu.lst. However, there was no Grub directory under Boot.

The only time an installation went without a hitch was when I did an install on another computer using the entire HD. Everything was fine with that.

Do you have any more ideas? I was going to give this Cd to a friend of mine who wanted to try Linux. He is now using Vista:( By the way: the CD that I am using is an "official" one from Canonical, I believe.

Thanks,
NicholasA

Is there, perhaps, something wrong with the installer, especially since it worked when the installation used the whole hard drive, but not within XP or when using an empty Linux partition?

I share the same problem and have searched every forum for a possible fix. It seems that many people have the same problem with just as many people giving mindless responses. YES everyone already knows that they shouldn't need a username or password to run the 8.04 livecd. It seems to accept the following username <ubuntu> and pswd <blank> but always end up back at the login request.
I'm an XP user and am very reluctant to eventually upgrade (downgrade?) to vista so the alternatives are linux or apple...somebody PLEASE help.

From a discussion on the Ubuntu-Users email list today, it sounds like the first step is to boot from the disk and test the disk for errors. (That takes awhile!)

Some people have also had success by burning the CD or DVD at a lower speed, such as 2x.

Tommy,

Thanks, but I have already checked for errors (no errors) and even tried burning at a slower speed (3x), but still no luck.

Am having the same problem. Installed Ubuntu and was never asked for user name. Now it won't accept any user name I try. Hope some one finds the answer to this problem.

Here's my problem:
Bought a computer (powerspec) which came with ubuntu 8.04 installed.
It booted and asked me to choose username and pw which I did.
Now when it asks to loging, it won't accept those entries.

I have a live CD but don't know how to boot from it to reinstall or troubleshoot.

What it "GRUB" - I can get to that but can't make sense of it?

Thanks!!!

I have no idea what to do with Ubuntu!!! I have gone to forums and asked different places and tried everything that I've read, and cannot get past the "Username" and "Password" windows.

From what I've read, I may be confounded because of a corrupted CD, but if you got the computer with it already installed, it would seem like it should be a "clean" copy. You can try this:

press Esc while it is trying to boot up, (to enter Grub)then go to the "recovery line", then the line that starts with "kernel" then write this:passwd userName (replace the userName with the account name) and you wil be asked to write a new password.

If you need more info try this site: http://www.ubuntux.org/how-to-change-the-root-password-in-ubuntu

Good luck. I am giving up on it. If you find any solution, I'd appreciate knowing what it is.

on another computer or on your xp partition go here and read how to add a user in ubuntu

go here http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/add-a-user-on-ubuntu-server/

You need to boot into recovery mode, select root (drop to root shell prompt)

add a new user and password

reboot into ubuntu

use new username and password you just created.

I had the same exact problem, installed ubuntu while in xp, when ubuntu first loaded I couldn't get passed the logon screen

once I added a user and password everything has been fine.

I'm a Linus novice and this was a painless proceedure.

Just found this message (don't use this email acct too much) and appreciate your addressing the Ubuntu issue. I had just about given up trying to make it work. (It's on my laptop, which is an extra computer, so I don't use it too often). When I get the courage to give it another go, I'll try what you said.
Thanks for helping.
