16.04 rejects external drive (OK 15.04)

Asked by chrisplaistow

I did not want to upgrade a perfectly working system, but was forced to when 15.04 would not install aria2c.

So I backed up all the vital stuff to a external drive - easy.

Loaded 16.04.

Tried to get some work done when bam!

Now I have NO ACCESS to any of my stuff.

Error message is:

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/chris/My Passport: Command-line `mount -t "exfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,namecase=0,errors=remount-ro,umask=0077" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/chris/My Passport"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: unknown filesystem type 'exfat'

The only way I can now work is go over to a friends house and use their computer to transfer files to a USB stick..

I can use a 15.04 live disk - so the drive is not the problem.

Drive is WD My Passport.

Another external drive Maxtor" is working properly.

Is there a fix?

Have you checked the file system to make sure it is complete and consistent?
When you are finished with the storage, do you use the safe remove feature in the OS before physically unplugging the storage?

Try installing the exfat-utils package.

Perhaps also the exfat-fuse package is required.

Thanks

I downloaded UBUNTU MATE 16.04.1 and installed it (erasing entire disk) and I now have aria2 and MY Passport external drive working perfectly.
