Can't get ubuntu live cd to run

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 on a eMachines desktop pc with an amd athlonxp2000+ processor and 512mb of ram. the desktop cd works fine in my compaq laptop but on the emachines when i choose the start or install option from the ubuntu options list it loads the kernel but gives justs stops and says

[ 52.993629] <0> Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

is there something wrong with my pc or am i doing something wrong?

It's likely you are not doing anything wrong. There are a number of bugs reported which you might like to look through to see if they match your system details, and maybe even provide solutions.

The other option might be to try the alternate CD.
