Defective SHip-it CDs

Today I recived the 3 Ubuntu cds i orderd about 5 weeks ago, and all 3 seem defective. HEre's whats going on. I tell it oppon booting to try without making changes to computer, and after its done loading all the items in the applications menu and the prefrences and administration bars in the system menue dont show up. Anyone know what's going on?

This won't be an issue with the Ship-it CD's. Chances are, its related to your specific hardware or computer.

But i burned one that i downloaded off the internet (i'm using it right now) and it works fine. But it is possible.

Really! Well, if all three were defective, then perhaps there is a whole bunch of them that are... Canonical will probably be aware of this, though. Are there any more issues, now that you have your own copy working?

I have had experience of CD's being damaged due to packaging and shipping even though they looked fine (from UK to Australia).
Not sure whether the problem was due to temperature extremes or compression in transit but they were dodgy by the time I got them.

It is also possible that the CD's shipped were burned using a slightly different image (and certainly media) from the one you are having success with.

As always, it's usually more reliable (and faster :) ) to get the CD yourself at

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

The checkbox for the alternate CD on that page gives is the most resilient if you already know you are going to install Ubuntu and don't need to test a "live CD" Ubuntu first.
