can't boot ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Rich B

When booting in Windows XP I'm given a choice of either XP or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu and the system hangs after loading a small portion of Ubuntu. Can't even turn it off. I'm using an Acer Laptop so my only choice is to remove the battery. What the heck is wrong.

In response... I get the Ubuntu splash screen. The loading bar shows about 1/8th of the system loaded and then the system dies. The splash screen remains. Cannot turn the machine off with the power button. I have to unplug the power source and then remove the battery.
This version of Ubuntu does not load into a separate partition. The doc says it will load onto the H/D just like any other program.
Could it be a bad download??? I don't have a clue.

Must be a defective install. If you must, re format that partition, check your ubuntu cd for defects, and if none, install on a smooth, still suface so the HDD isint jolted.

Can you help with this problem?
