upgrading from 7.04-8.04

Asked by china_13

hi, im a new user, so forgive the ignorance.
i have fiesy fawn (7.04) installed on my laptop, i have tried out hardy heron (8.04) and was very impressed with it, how do i go about upgrading to using 8.04? because i do not want to format my computer just to load it again. i have tried inserting it into the pc and installing the packages but it did not install all, also it says that the version of open office and firefox are the latest, when i know that it is not!
thanks in advannce for the help,
also what are the recommended books or tutorials available for learning how to use and understand both linux distributions and ubuntu?

please open one request per question, it helps keeping track.

to update, just run:
sudo update-manager --dist-upgrade
in a terminal

it is very unlikely that you loose data during the upgrade, but it's better to be safe so backup your data before. it's always good to have a backup.

linux/ubuntu are very well documented only, look around on launchpad, ubuntu.com, ubuntuforums.org or read the wikipedia article and follow the references.
