cd playing

when I put in the cd, no icon appears on the desktop. I hear the cd being checked, but then stops. I am not able to play the cd. How can I get the cd to play?

I am using Dell Inspiron 6400 with Ubuntu 8.04

Did you check the CD with another PC to see if it works? Also, did you check the CD-ROM itself?

Since asking question, I have reinstalled Sound Juicer (although I cannot find it in any menu - but that is another question). I also installed Amarok, and somehow that has resolved the problem of recognisind and reading the audio cd. I can now play the cd. So that seems to be 'problem solved.
