Hi,

All the information you need should be here: http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting

If you need a hand finding specifics just ask.

Cheers,

Matt

No problem, I enjoy helping (or trying to). :)

You're right, it isn't on there at all.

You might be able to try the suggested drivers for similar printers.

Maybe http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_MP830 or http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_MP760.

If you can't find any drivers that work for you you could add your printer (http://openprinting.org/edit_printer.cgi?newentry=1) and someone might add a known driver for it.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi again,

If this has solved your problem it would be great if you could mark it as solved. It would help other people choose which support requests need their help.

Cheers,

Matt

I was able to get printing working on my PIXMA MP800 by installing the "Canon MultiPASS C2500 Foomatic/bjc600" using CUPS but there were a few issues with the dpi settings. This can be fixed by changing the printer's configuration file, but first install the above printer using CUPS.

The dpi settings available by default using CUPS are at most "360x360" but this is too small for the page. I changed the dpi settings by editing the .ppd file for this printer (depends on what you name it, but will probably say "Canon_MP800_USB_1.ppd" or some such, and is located in /etc/cups/ppd/

In the section that begins with
*OpenUI *Resolution/Resolution: PickOne

change the line that reads *DefaultResolution: 360x360dpi to
*DefaultResolution: 580x610dpi

and add the line that corresponds to this:
*Resolution 600x600dpi/600 DPI: "<</HWResolution[580 610]>>setpagedevice"

This should go among the other *Resolution lines (before CloseUI).

Restart CUPS
> sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

and now when you check the cups system for your printer's configuration, you should see that the changes have taken effect. You can try printing a test page to check that the settings work (no problems for me so far). The values seem that they should be 600 by 600 but the test page wouldn't print all the way to the right, and the bottom margin was too big, so I tweaked the settings until it looked better. I don't think I'll miss the extra margin space for right and bottom, but if anyone involved in developing the cups driver is reading this, it might be worth checking out.

I haven't tested the functionality of this printer to any great extent (I've only printed some text documents and the colors on the cups test page) but it works as far as I've tested it. I hope this helps anyone else trying to get this computer hooked up to their Linux box.

 - Kevin Damm

versions:
cups v1.2.2
BJC600.PPD format: 4.3 file: 1.1
Linux 2.6.15-27-386 (but should work on any cups-capable os)

After printing a few more jobs, I have found that the above driver adn ppd file do not actually work as expected. Printing through lpr gives smaller page output, and the changes I made to the configuration didn't help.

Furthermore, I was able to get proper print resolution for black text with "Canon PIXMA iP4000 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc2" but the blue color shifts and stretches to the right, making some text illegible. It also prints *much* slower than expected.

I'll continue looking for a driver that works; for now it seems I'll have to settle for b/w only printing (and slowly, at that) with the MP800 under linux.

I have no problems printing to my MP800. Speed in great and colors are fine. Scan and memory card reader not yet tested. Running Suse 10.1

First I installed turbo print - Did not work very well.

I then installed cnijfilter-mp600-2.70-2.i386.rpm and I am printing w/ CUPS

Can you help with this problem?
